Born in Montréal in 1971, Julien has Canadian and Swiss citizenship. He started his professional career at Vaudoise Assurances in Lausanne as an Actuary for the Individual Life team in 1994. In 1997, Julien joined Swiss Re in Zurich as Marketing Actuary for L&H Belgium-Luxembourg. He subsequently held various Pricing Actuary and Client Manager positions before becoming Key Account Manager for European Global clients in 2007. After several senior managerial roles in L&H, he was appointed Hub Head L&H Products Continental Europe and LatAm in October 2012. He became Hub Head L&H Products EMEA in 2015. In January 2017, Julien was appointed Chief Underwriting Officer of Swiss Re Life Capital and then became ad interim CEO Life Capital on 1 September 2020. Julien was appointed Head of Life & Health Swiss Re Institute and Chief Underwriting Officer of the newly created iptiQ Division in January 2021. Additionally, Julien was appointed Group CEO of elipsLife ad interim in April 2021. In April 2022 Julien returned to Reinsurance as Head Life & Health Products.
Julien studied Mathematics / Actuarial Science at the University of Montréal where he graduated in 1994. In 2005 he became Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).
Julien Descombes lives in Zurich and is married with two daughters.
